Mountain Bike Holidays

Mountain bike holidays can be taken in almost any country where there are mountains, from Spain in Europe, Bolivia in South America, to Thailand in Asia. Mountain biking is an experience enjoyed on all continents, by all kinds of people. With mountain bike holidays you can easily be spoilt for choice, from short weekend escapes to several weeks away on a trans Andean adventure.

Generally these trips are best done in small groups, sometimes as small as between 3 and 8 riders, other times between around 7 to 14. By going on an organised tour you are more likely to find the one that is right for you, taking account of your level of experience, skill and fitness. Mountain bike holidays shouldn't be down to pure guesswork, as routes need to be carefully planned well in advance so that riders get to see the local sights, places of interest, accommodation in the right places and so on. To enjoy the perfect holiday experience nothing is left to chance.

On some mountain bike holidays they will even feature such things as backup vehicles and several guides to improve safety. For those who prefer to be a bit more independent, on some holidays taken in the mountains its possible to obtain free or low cost bike hire. Trail maps may be provided to help riders navigate the mountains. For safety reasons its always advisable to ride with at least one other person and to inform the staff of your intended route and ETA. And of course safety helmets should always be worn.

Some of the best mountain bike holidays take place in Spain. The Marina Alta Mountains lies about one hour away from the coast. None of the usual tourist trappings there. One mountain bike holiday company uses a guesthouse as its base in a small village which is surrounded by mountains. These mountains are criss crossed by mountain bike trails, including terrific rocky single tracks. What better than to explore the region and take in the breathtaking views by riding the trails on a mountain bike?

Whether you are a beginner or looking for something more challenging, younger in years or at retirement age, there is bound to be a mountain bike holiday to suit you.

Mountain bike orienteering (MTBO) is becoming more porpular these days and is often included as a part of mountain bike holidays. Its an orienteering based endurance racing sport on a mountain bike where navigation is done along trails and tracks. Navigation tactics are similar to ski orienteering, where the major focus is route choice while navigating, which can be difficult at high speeds.
